Five Benefits of Having “Couples” as Friends

By | December 16, 2011

When many people think about having “couples” as friends, they might initially be turned off by the idea. After all, when couples get together, the fun generally seems to be a bit predictable: maybe you have dinner either at home or go out, maybe you play a game or two, but that’s about it. For some, this might pale in comparison to the fun they’re used to having with their spouse.

But is having other couples as friends really all that tedious? It doesn’t have to be! If you’re the kind of person who worried about building friendships with other couples, it’s time to put those worries to rest. Here are five benefits to having couples as friends that should sway you to the other side.

Benefit #1: More couples, more friends. When you meet a “couple,” guess how many people you’re meeting? The answer is obvious: you’re meeting two friends every time you come across a new couple. Some might argue and say that the men really just meet one friend and the women really meet one friend, but when you add all of the friends that both sides of their couples bring to the table, you see just how impactful it is to meet two people instead of one. The more people you come across, the more likely you are to come across someone who shares your interests either as a couple or as individuals.

Benefit #2: Double dates. Not everyone enjoys the idea of a double date – particularly the single among us – but when you’re a couple it can mean a lot of fun. Four people being present make the likelihood of lively conversation that much more powerful, which is important if one of the “couples” is on one of their first dates. Double dates also help you to feel more comfortable when going out because you’re part of a larger group.

Benefit #3: Trips! When you have another couple as a pair of really good friends, you can finally travel in a larger group simply by asking one or two other couples on a vacation! Granted, these aren’t always easy to arrange, particularly when you’re coordinating everyone’s schedule, but if you plan in advance and everyone is enthused about the trip, you find plenty of travel companions. You don’t have to head to Hawaii, either – even camping or hiking trips can have more fun when you add more people.

Benefit #4: Girl talk/guy talk. Sometimes, even when you’re out with your significant other, it can be fun for each of you to meander off from each other and start talking to someone you relate to. Ever notice that it’s easier to handle parties if the groups naturally “segment” themselves, and you’re able to find a group? Imagine that principle working for you all the time.

Benefit #5: The more, the merrier. Finally, simply having an active, full social life full of plenty of people is a great way to avoid the drudgery of day-to-day routines, open yourself up, get out of your head, and simply have a good time.
